I want to get a feel for how the adds affect folks enjoyment of this forum. I have been seeing a few on my iPad but not so far on my pc. We have a honeymoon period but you will see them soon. We can pay to eliminate them, it isn’t much but there is a danger that bots like google and such search and search so using up the paid add free views. No big deal really just want to know what folks think, good bad, must be got rid of, can live with?

Hi Rod,
I can testify that it doesn't pay to have a browser with an ad blocker.
You get a giant, in your face FACE! with text "Can we talk" pop up window.
They don't want to talk at all, they want to tell you to turn off the ad blocker.
So 6 or one half dozen of another...
What is really annoying is the bouncing up and down when you have an ad blocker. Then the ads plus ad blocker causes the whole Forum or editor to bounce up and down several times while trying to click or type on one line, you end up clicking another... wastes allot of time.

Hmmm... sounds disruptive. I was living with the ads as they did not seem too intrusive, the issue is cost. Quite rightly they need to make some return for providing the service. They have a fairer system than Conforums in that you don’t have to buy blocks of ad free views which may or may not be used during the month. You can run an overdraft which means you only pay for views used over and above an initial block.
The problem is that bots are all over us from google, bing etc using page views. So that might mean we need to go member only viewing rather than guest viewing which I would hope to avoid.
We did have a donate button on Conforums which helped, but here it is back to volunter funding. No big deal just yet.
Is you ad blocker intelligent enough to vary its handling of web sites? If so how does the forum look with the dreaded ads?

Yes, I can disable blocker for certain sites, I think, I've not tried. Just today I had to toss my cookies for another site! Append: OK here is new look! (2 attached) I have to say, it is better than in your face FACE! Attachments:

Thanks so as a last resort we might live with ads, I am hoping not to but if the costs get too high we know what to do.
I have to say I don’t know why the advertisers bother, I have never ever clicked on a link. But they are paying for the forum right now so I should be polite.

We shouldn't be using ad-blockers. That's the right way, so Proboards earns its money and we get a free forum hosting.

That’s really a personal choice. I use a call blocker on my phone line because life would be unbearable without it. I don’t use ab ad blocker because I don’t visit web sites with intrusive ads. The point I think is that ProBoard ads are not too intrusive. If you do have to visit sites where ads are intrusive indeed deceptive then I can imagine an ad blocker is very worthwhile.

Ha, ha! The datacamp ads are a bit ironic, I wonder if JB or LB is on the list?
BTW do you think police records appropriate for children?

I would expect bots to be excluded, since these are not adding money. Bots can be identified, at least the official ones, so no worry about them to consume views free of ads.
