I have just replaced my Dell desktop/win10 with a new one. Unlike my previous Dell any file with suffix .bas is considered to be an Acrobat file. Win10 preferences show Acrobat as the default app for all .bas files, and when I try to change it Just Basic is not listed as an option. Not critical, but very irritating. Any ideas?

Register the bas file to the Just Basic exe when you get the choice of choosing "other app" in that settings window,
Windows settings Apps Default Apps > "Choose default app by file" near bottom (wait for windows to load extensions)
scroll down to .bas click + for "choose a default" and hopefully you are allowed to search for path to JB exe to select.

I had managed to get that far, but Adobe was already set as the default application for .bas and the only other option was 'look for an app in the Microsoft Store'. Needless to say Just Basic was not listed, and I could find no option to specify the link to JB myself. Any other suggestions would be most welcome.

Just as an experiment.
1) right click on any .bas file and choose open with, choose open with other app, follow the dialog, navigate to jbasic.exe, click always use this .exe to open .bas
2) right click on the Just BASIC icon and choose Open File location. Now right click on jbasic.exe and choose properties. What shows in the general pane for properties, is the .exe blocked? you can click unblock if it is. then try the association again.
3) did you have Just BASIC v1 installed and did you set file associations to .bas? If so you may need to delete all reference to V1 from the Registry. if you simply deleted v1 the registry thinks it is broken and wont look for v2 But this would be unusual.
tell us how you get on.

Dang Windows, one little insult after another... but what Rod says makes sense, I wish I didn't waste both our time with first idea because Rod's is way easier! BTW how does Acrobat rule bas files? Time for another Internet search.

A neat trick which worked - many thanks!
I followed your suggestion 1 exactly, which enabled me to specify JB2 as the default app for .bas. Then I clicked 'always use for .bas' and then checked the file association, and there it was. :-)
I then tried suggestion 2 and the exe file was not blocked, so no action was needed.
Suggestion 3 was not required as my new Dell arrived just two weeks ago and JB1 was never installed on it.
I've been a professional programmer since I graduated in maths in 1962, and as I will be 80 in 12 days the new Dell was my present to myself - but you never stop learning, or wanting to. Thanks again to you both.

I've never heard of .bas being associated with Adobe Acrobat, are you sure it came like that out-of-the-box?

Good news, we look forward to your BASIC contributions. You will find Just BASIC fun and easy to use. There are many example programs that ship with JB and have a look at the files archive. Something will peak your interest.
Never be stuck there are plenty folks here able to help.

Yes ntech, it came out-of-the-box like that. Like you, I have never seen .bas associated with Acrobat on any of my 17 previous Windows PCs. I've just checked my wife's 18 month old Dell laptop, and .bas has no file association as there is no Basic development app installed.
