I am currently in a small online BASIC programming class and its been a horrible time, as what time i have been able to give to the course has been spent trying to figure out the file paths; we are directed to download images from links provided and place them in the %appdata% folder labeled "images" inside of our "class application" folder where we stroe the programs we work on. from day 1 this has been a problem for me. when i download the file, the only way i know how to move it from downloads is cut and paste. the ONLY way i can find this appdata folder is when i enter it thru BASIC file button. but when i cut and paste, nothing is there. this isnt unlike the post i put up a month ago. the instructor has been useless, but it also seems i am the only one who has had this problem. when i do a file search, like the instructor told me to do, nothing comes back but a long laundry list of stuff that includes "%appdata%". Ive included some screen shots in hopes it might help. this has pretty much ruined the course for me, as it has been a requirement each lesson to have to deal with this relative file path in some way. I know this really isnt a BASIC question either but im hoping someone might tell me what to do ..

Hi noob4life (we're gonna change that noob status)
Ya, windows hides the appdata folder by default.
You need to go into your file explorer, and at the top tabs select "View" then go to the right and find "Hidden Items" and check the box.
The %appdata% folder will be in c:\Users\Bryce and should now be visible.
Any other issues with windows or Just Basic, just ask.
edit ---> p.s. I should mention that once you do this you will see quite a few files you didn't see before when you navigate around the file explorer, and your desktop etc. Just remember it was due to this change so you don't get worried about all the extra files you see. Windows hides a lot from the user by default.

I just typed it in from navigator, what a PITA, but I created a shortcut after I got it up in navigator and dropped it in my Desktop from where I work. Actually I dont find JB until I get into Roaming from AppData

@ plus - The OP isn't looking for the JB dir - from what the OP posted they are looking for a dir within appdata of an unnamed app, and within that folder should be a folder named "images"
I can only guess that the "app" folder they are looking for is within "c:\users\Bryce\appdata\roaming\"APPNAME\images"" since no app name was given. Unless "class application" is the actual name then "c:\users\Bryce\appdata\roaming\class application\images"
If the dir they are looking for isn't there, it could be anywhere within the appdata dir or it's sub folders.

As stated Windows has started hiding the %appdata% folder from the user. In downloads be sure the download is not a .zip if it is you need to extract it first. If the file you want to move is listed then highlight it and press CtrlC that copy’s not cuts the file. Now in explorer in the path bar at the top simply key in %appdata% you may need to highlight and replace the path showing, now you should see your Appdata folder with the various sub folders listed. One will be roaming but you should see your class directory and within thst your image directory. Navigate to the image directory and press CtrlV paste. The file should now be in your desired directory.
You might try and avoid all this by creating your own class directory and sub image directory simply under c: experiment, create a new class directory under c: then create the image directory inside thst directory then copy over a few of your lesson files and see if you can load and run them. Avoiding appdata would simplify things. It was once the way to work but Windows has made it almost unusable for manually managed files.
I also think you have managed to create several appdata directories, they will probably all be empty. So when you key in %appdata% you should see quite a few sub directories. If you see nothing you are in the wrong place.
Have a ho at moving everything to c:\class and c:\class\images life might be simpler.

First, Post your exact instructions, verbatim.
Second, to get to AppData folder you open explorer and type %appdata% in the path box (NOT in the search box!) (interesting thing, it opens c:\users\myUsername\AppData\Roaming, where I see Just BASIC folder and some other stuff)
Third, Windows FileOpen dialog is actually full featured Windows Explorer. So start Just BASIC Press File|open select with a right click any folder you see there (say BMP) and choose "open in a new window" And now you have Explorer opened at AppData\Roaming\JustBasic v2.0\BMP, and could go from there.
I pretty sure Ctrl-C Ctrl-V should work. Open two explorer windows, on Download, over your target folder, and copy with Ctrl-C in Download and Ctrl-V in target folder.

Yeah sorry, didn't really understand OP. Still a newbie problem to JBer's is trying to find the AppData folder because all the important JB stuff is in there.
This being a JB forum I thought that was the problem. My point is still valid, to find AppData folder type it in off User folder in File Explorer I was calling navigator. Saving that as Shortcut to there makes a fine pathway to it, say in a Bat file. I think of Bat files when I see the % sign surrounding the folder name, isn't that a Bat file variable?

I believe it's OS environment variable. And yes, they tend to be used in BAT files a lot

I think I may have spoke too soon, and it is I who owe you the apology. After re-reading the first post carefully, it could go either way. lol bat file variables get surrounded by % , also like tsh73 says they are also put around the windows default environment variables. There's a long list of them pureinfotech.com/list-environment-variables-windows-10/ that can be used with cmd and JB's Run command. From a windows command prompt eg: echo %username% for any of the variables in the list.

To move everything to an easier location.
Click on the Explorer icon, the little folder. It should show [This PC >] in the paths box highlighted. if not, highlight everything. Now type in %appdata% It should show something like [This pc > Xyz(c:)>Users>YourNa>Appdata>Roaming] It should also list other programs and your ClassLesson folder. if not navigate to it Single Click on the ClassLesson folder to highlight it. if you double click it will open, navigate back up. Click on the Copy icon next to the scissors. Now click on the Xyz(c:) in the path box. It should show your root directory. Now click on the Paste icon two icons in from the scissors.
Thats it your Classlesson folder and all sub folders have been copied to C: You should find it much easier to find the folder and to copy new stuff into it. When you fire up Just BASIC just navigate to your new C: copy of ClassLesson and forget all about the old folder.

Another way to move a file (in JB /LB): - Create a "Y" folder. - Create a folder "A" and a folder: "B" in the folder "Y" - Put a file (file.txt ") in the folder: "A" Save this code in the folder "Y"
Name "A\file.txt" as "B/file.txt"
Run. For other folders ---> Complete paths.

Far safer to copy and paste rather than name. No second chances with name. Best stick to copy and paste for learners.

thanks alot guys. its a shame that the "instructor" had NONE of this to say despite multiple rants from me. ive got to find a block of 7 days to go thru your suggestions. im a liberal arts guys and this is all spanish. im also a visual learner, if one of you sat down and showed me id get it, but when you throw in all the jargon i get confused. but i did the simplest thing first and un-hid the files, WOW there it is lol.
But how come when you access the file paths from inside BASIC, you can see the folder but a copy/paste does nothing?
the images are not zip files, so now i can downloads them and then do a copy paste , not cut paste, into the now visible folder? in the first program we wrote because of this problem i did a work around, i changed several of my own images into bmp files form jpeg and changed the file paths in the code to go to another file, but it didnt work and the instructor did not tell me why despite asking. but thats for another time, im just kindah ranting now. thanks much!

Glad you have some progress but there should really not be any black magic involved. Do ask exact questions. Do post exact instructions that you try to follow, and describe what happens.
In such circumstances always POST THE CODE. Without code, all I can tell that there are VERY MANY WAYS to go wrong. Some folks even manage go several wrong ways at once. But sometimes difference between wrong and right is single line. (but noone will tell you unless they see your CODE!)
